Lee H. Hamilton is an American politician and attorney who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1965 to 1999. He was born on April 20, 1931, in Daytona Beach, Florida. He graduated from DePauw University with a degree in history and then went on to study law at Indiana University, from where he earned his law degree.
Hamilton served in Congress as a Democrat from Indiana's 9th District for 34 years, and he became one of the most influential figures in American foreign policy during the 1980s and 1990s. He was a key player in the passage of the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986 and the creation of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, better known as the 9/11 Commission, which he served as Vice Chairman.
After his time in Congress, Hamilton became a leading voice on issues of foreign policy, national security, and democracy. He has written numerous articles and books on these topics and is a frequent commentator in the media. He is also a senior advisor to the Indiana University Center on Representative Government and lectures on American foreign policy and democracy at Indiana University.
